As our society has become more environmentally aware, green building is here to stay. A product can be classified green for a variety of reasons:
- Energy efficiency
- Health and safety for its inhabitants
- Durable construction
- Water efficiency
- Responsiveness to the environment
- Sustainability for the community
Building green is not only good for the environment; it is a sound investment choice. The U.S. Green Building Council estimates that building green increases a building’s value by 7.5%.
BluWood is a green building product because it can improve indoor air quality. Because it is mold resistant, it can reduce your family’s allergies. BluWood is nontoxic, contains little to no volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and there are no special handling requirements.
While other framing products claim to be green, BluWood is the only certified product of its kind and has been used in several prominent green projects:
- GreenBuilder magazine’s 2008 VISION House Series in New Orleans, Louisiana
- Brad Pitt’s Global Green project in New Orleans, Louisiana
- Coastal Living 2008 Idea House in Galveston, Texas
GreenSpec® listed
BluWood is a GreenSpec® listed product, which means it is universally accepted as a green building product. GreenSpec® is a directory of over 2,000 environmentally preferable building products, managed by BuildingGreen LLC, an independent company that provides accurate and unbiased information designed to help building-industry professionals and policy makers improve the environmental performance and reduce the adverse impacts of buildings.
It is also eligible for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) projects. LEED is a third party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.
Environmental Benefits
BluWood is a sustainable product. When you choose BluWood, your home or new construction will require less maintenance due to moisture, fungi or termites than homes built with standard materials.
According to the New York State Attorney General’s office, 95% of the pesticides used on residential lawns are considered probable carcinogens by the EPA. BluWood’s termite and insect-resistant formula eliminates the need to add these dangerous chemicals to the ground.*
Volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) including pesticides found indoors are believed to cause 3,000 cases of cancer a year in the U.S. BluWood contains no VOC’s or other carcinogens, making it a smart building choice to protect your home and family.
Indoor allergies and asthma affect over 50 million people. In the Gulf South region, humidity and moisture are growing health concerns. BluWood eliminates the possibility of mold and fungi in your home’s structure on coated materials, protecting your family from dangerous allergens.
* Some termite bonds may still require lawn treatment.
